"Spooky" originated as a 1966 saxophone-driven instrumental track by jazz musician Mike Sharpe (Mike Shapiro). It was reworked into a vocal song in 1967 by Classics IV (featuring singer Dennis Yost) after producer Buddy Buie and guitarist J.R. Cobb added lyrics about an enigmatic girl. The vocal version became a major hit in 1968.
