Hello everyone!
My name is Robby Williams, and I am a master level psychologist working in the Mental Health field. I am also a Health Coach as well as a Life Skills Coach. The psychology of online dating is a multifaceted field that explores the motivations, behaviors, and mental health impacts of people using digital platforms to find romantic partners. It encompasses both positive aspects, such as increased access to potential partners, and negative ones, like the potential for being scammed, burnout, and even reaching a decline in self-esteem. People seek to maximize rewards and minimize costs in relationships. Online dating enables people to evaluate potential partners based on profiles (physical attractiveness, intellect, interests, and so on) before committing time and effort, thus minimizing the initial "cost" of meeting in person.
Some studies suggest that meeting online may encourage earlier self-disclosure, which can build a relationship with emotional intimacy. However, others report that couples who met offline experience slightly higher levels of relationship satisfaction. Nearly 59,000 Americans have fallen victim to romance scams in 2024, losing an estimated $697.3 million. In 2025, romance scam victims are projected to lose approximately $2.5 billion, with over 107,000 individuals affected by these scams. Average Loss per Victim: The average financial loss per victim is anticipated to rise to around $5,200 at the low end, reflecting the increasing sophistication of scammers and the amounts they target. The high-end average financial loss per romance scam victim is about $15,000, with the use of technology.
