Growing up on the Oregon Coast, I was surrounded by selfish addiction my whole life. Alcohol was everywhere—and I watched it destroy people and families again and again.

I’ve seen parents choose booze over their children, children choose booze over their parents. Men throw away the women they claimed to love, and women do the same to men—all for the bottle.
The worst I’ve seen are parents who keep drinking while their children are already struggling with alcohol themselves. It’s like their kids mean nothing compared to their own slow suicide. “But I only have one now and then!” they say, while their children waste away.
Even my father had his battles—but he chose those he loved over the monster of alcohol. That choice matters.
Even when I almost had a problem with it myself, I chose my family.
I saw the people I love the most having issues, and that’s when I made my rule: Not even one more. I cut alcohol off completely. I figured it out, I fixed it myself—and after all of that, I still had a family member yell and scream at me about what I had already conquered.
And here’s the truth: even if you think you’re only hurting yourself, every time you drink you’re putting others at risk. Intoxication is a danger to everyone around you—every rational person who refuses to poison themselves.
Alcohol is not love. Alcohol is slavery.
