This video humorously discusses the presence and representation of Black comics at a festival in Austin, Texas, using jokes and observations.
[82:06-82:24]
SpeakerA makes a joke about being allowed to talk to Black people in Austin, highlighting the representation of Black comics at the festival, and SpeakerB agrees.
I don't know if you're allowed to talk to him. You, you're in Austin. But this is remote, so I think you can bypass the law of no talking to Black people. Oh, I talk, I, I, yeah, I s- I heard you mention that. I, uh, there's a lot of Black comics in my book, and, and there's a lot represented on the festival, so, uh, I don't think that they're represented at all in Austin.
[82:24-82:34]
SpeakerA and SpeakerB make a controversial joke about Black people in Texas.
Oh, they let them into Texas? Huh? Ah, they let them into Texas? I didn't know they let them in, um, to Tex- No, those are the ones who are already in. They were grandfathered in through slavery. They can't leave. Oh, right.
[82:34-82:49]
SpeakerA lists Black comedians at the festival including Moe Alexander, Dante Powell, and Bernard Hill.
I don't know. You'd have to ask, uh, Moe Alexander or Dante Powell or, uh, Bernard Hill or- Listen to him, listen to him black name drop. I'm not black name dropping. I'm just mentioning some of the comics of, uh, color that are on the Fest and have been for many years and are also in the book.
[82:49-83:11]
SpeakerA acknowledges the "black name drop" comment, and SpeakerB discusses Austin's inclusive comedy scene.
I mean, uh- Yeah, I said black name drop. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I mean, I, I, I, uh, as a New Yorker, uh, who's been in Texas 20 years, I, I think there's, uh, the fact obviously the Austin scene is pretty, uh, skewered right now. But, uh, my, I would argue that Austin has been largely the most inclusive scene in all of Texas over the years.
