Did our Lord Jesus Christ truly establish a Church, or is Christianity meant to be practiced simply as a personal belief without a visible community of faith?
In this Orthodox Bible study, we explore what the Holy Scriptures, the apostles, and the early Church Fathers reveal about the Church founded by Christ. Many people today think of the Church merely as a building, a human organization, or a later development in Christian history. However, the witness of Scripture and the teaching of the early Christians reveal something far deeper.
According to Orthodox Christian teaching, the Church is the living Body of Christ, established by Christ Himself, revealed through the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and preserved through the apostolic tradition. The Church is both a visible community gathered in worship and a spiritual communion united in Christ.
In this study we examine Christ’s promise to build His Church, the life of the earliest Christian community, and the testimony of the early Church Fathers who defended and preserved the apostolic faith.

The Church and the Spiritual Life
Orthodox Christianity teaches that the Church is not merely an institution but the place where believers grow spiritually and experience the transforming grace of God.
Within the life of the Church, Christians grow through:
• Prayer
• The Holy Eucharist
• Repentance and spiritual discipline
• Fasting and watchfulness
• Fellowship in the Body of Christ
Through these practices believers are gradually transformed and grow toward theosis, participation in the divine life through God’s grace.
