The Blessed Virgin Mary is not the example of a woman who lived without suffering.

She is the example of a woman who remained faithful through suffering.

She said yes at the Annunciation.

She carried Christ.

She endured uncertainty.

She witnessed the suffering of her Son.

She stood at the cross.

She remained faithful.

And her story ultimately leads us beyond death to life.

That is why Mary is such a powerful spiritual mother and model for the Orthodox Christian.

Her message to us is simple:

Trust God when you do not understand.

Remain faithful when life becomes difficult.

Stand beside those who suffer.

Bring the needs of others to Christ.

And never forget that the cross is not the end.

Beyond the Cross is Resurrection.

The Orthodox Church’s liturgical tradition celebrates the Theotokos precisely within this mystery of Christ: she is honored because of the salvation accomplished by her Son, and her life becomes an image of the Church and of the Christian calling to receive and live Christ.
