Why Didn’t Jesus Choose Jerusalem or Gerizim? — A Short Explanation
The debate between Jerusalem and Mount Gerizim was a real and serious conflict between Jews and Samaritans about the true place of worship (John 4:20). Each side claimed divine authority—Jerusalem through the Temple and prophetic tradition, and Gerizim through the Samaritan Pentateuch.
When the Samaritan woman raised this issue, Jesus Christ gave a surprising answer. He first affirmed that “salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22), recognizing that the full revelation of God’s plan came through Israel. Yet He did not declare Jerusalem as the final answer.
Instead, He said:
“The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:23).
The Meaning of His Answer
Worship is no longer tied to a specific place
God is Spirit, not confined to geography
* True worship is now through Christ, not through a mountain or temple
Jesus Himself becomes the true Temple (John 2:21), and through Him, believers worship God in the Holy Spirit and in truth.
The Conclusion ✨
Jesus did not choose between Jerusalem and Gerizim because both belonged to an earlier stage of God’s plan.
👉 He did not take sides—He fulfilled and surpassed both.
The question is no longer where to worship, but how:
through Christ, in spirit and in truth.
