Jim was a dedicated Prison Officer at Crumlin Road Gaol, a role he carried with immense pride and commitment throughout his life. Beyond his work, Jim was a devoted husband, loving father to five children, and cherished brother to his six surviving siblings.

Family meant everything to Jim. His home was filled with love, loyalty, and the companionship of his beloved black Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Sam. Friends and colleagues affectionately knew Jim as “Big Bird” because of his towering height, standing well over six feet tall, but those closest to him knew him best for his warmth, strength, and dedication to the people he loved.

Sam, his faithful dog, was rarely far from Jim’s side. Their bond was unbreakable, with each devoted to the other. Tragically, the horrific events of that night left deep trauma, and Sam later had to be put to sleep.

On the night of 1st September 1993, Jim was at home with his wife and youngest daughter. While standing in the kitchen, armed gunmen violently forced their way into the family home and shot him in the chest. Jim was taken to hospital but sadly died later that night from his injuries.

It was later confirmed that the Ulster Volunteer Force claimed responsibility for his murder. Despite investigations, those responsible were never brought to justice, and Jim’s murder remains unsolved.

Jim is remembered not for the violence that ended his life, but for the loyalty, kindness, pride, and devotion he showed to his family, his work, and everyone who knew him.
