Dr Éamon Phoenix (1953–2022) was one of Northern Ireland’s most respected historians, broadcasters, and public educators. Born in Belfast, he dedicated his life to researching and explaining Irish history, with a particular focus on nationalism, partition, and the complex story of Northern Ireland.

A graduate and later scholar of Queen’s University Belfast, Dr Phoenix went on to become a principal lecturer at Stranmillis University College. He was widely known for his engaging teaching style and his ability to make history accessible to everyone—not just academics.

Beyond the classroom, he became a familiar voice and face through regular appearances on BBC Northern Ireland and his long-running “On This Day” column in The Irish News. His work helped bring historical context to everyday audiences, earning him a reputation as a “people’s historian.”

Dr Phoenix was also deeply involved in public life, contributing to historical advisory groups and promoting greater understanding across communities during Northern Ireland’s Decade of Centenaries.

He passed away in November 2022, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a storyteller, educator, and bridge-builder whose work continues to inform and inspire.
