Greyfriars Bobby – Edinburgh’s Most Famous Dog 🐾
Few stories are as closely associated with Edinburgh as that of Greyfriars Bobby, the little terrier remembered for his extraordinary loyalty to his master.
According to the traditional story, Bobby belonged to John Gray an Edinburgh City Police nightwatchman who died in 1858. After Gray was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, Bobby is said to have remained by his master's grave for the next 14 years, becoming a much-loved figure around Edinburgh.
When Bobby died in 1872, he was buried close to his master's grave, just outside the consecrated ground of Greyfriars Kirkyard.
Today, the famous Greyfriars Bobby statue, created by sculptor William Brodie, stands near the entrance to the kirkyard and has become one of Edinburgh's most recognisable landmarks.
But how much of Bobby's famous story is actually true? In this video, we explore the history, the legend and some of the fascinating questions that have been raised about Edinburgh's most famous dog.
