Bhopal Gas Tragedy – One of the World's Worst Industrial Disasters

On the night of 2–3 December 1984, the city of Bhopal, India, became the scene of one of the worst industrial disasters in history.

A deadly cloud of methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas escaped from the Union Carbide pesticide plant and spread across nearby communities while thousands of people were asleep.

People awoke struggling to breathe, with severe irritation to their eyes and lungs. Thousands died in the immediate aftermath, while hundreds of thousands more were exposed to the toxic gas. Many survivors suffered serious and long-lasting health problems.

The tragedy raised profound questions about **industrial safety, corporate responsibility, emergency planning and environmental protection.

More than four decades later, Bhopal remains a powerful reminder of what can happen when safety systems fail and communities live alongside hazardous industrial facilities.
