*The Siege of Derry – 1689

In 1689, the city of Derry endured one of the most famous sieges in British and Irish history.

Beginning in April during the Williamite War, the Protestant defenders of the city held out for 105 days against the Jacobite forces of King James II. With food running desperately low and disease spreading, the situation inside the walls became increasingly desperate.

Then, on 28 July 1689, the relief ships *Mountjoy and Phoenix broke through the boom across the River Foyle, bringing desperately needed supplies to the besieged city.

The siege was lifted shortly afterwards, and the defence of Derry became a defining event in the history and traditions of Ulster.

Today, the city walls remain a remarkable reminder of those dramatic events more than 330 years ago.
