Throughout the history of NASCAR from 1948-2025, at the end of each season a champion is crowned. The manner in which they decide the champion has evolved over time. 36 different drivers have at least won a championship in their career. Three different drivers in essentially different eras each won 7 Cup Series titles a piece.

Richard Petty competed from 1958-1992. Gaining the moniker The King because he holds so many statistical records in the Nascar Cup Series. Though in his era it was more about taking care of your equipment and outlasting the competition.

Dale Earnhardt competed from 1975-2001. People began calling him The Intimidator due to the fact when he showed up in a drivers rear view mirror many were a bit intimidated. Earnhardt had some decent equipment but not the very best like the other two drivers on this list. If something wasn't possible from his equipment, he would often make it happen through his driving abilities.

Jimmie Johnson competed from 2001-2025, gaining his Superman nickname through his superhuman abilities behind the wheel of a Hendrick Motorsports racecar. Johnson was an excellent driver no doubt, but he has showed that once the series changed the design of their racecar his stats fell way off. Like Petty, Johnson had the top equipment in the series during his prime run.
