Derrike Cope joined the Nascar Cup Series on a full-time basis in 1988. Starting at race 9 in Talladega in 1989, Cope joined Bob Whitecomb Racing's #10 Pontiac race team. With Buddy Parrott serving as the teams crew chief. Dale Earnhardt dominated the race, leading 155 out of 200 laps in the event. Through some excellent tire strategy and some well-time luck for Cope.
