Delma Cowart is a former Nascar Cup Series and ARCA Series driver who made attempts and occasional starts in both series from 1981-1997. Never really finding all that much success in his racing efforts, Cowart was able to build up an enjoyable, friendly relationship between he and his fellow competitors. The fans overtime came to find him rather entertaining, with his funny quotes and sayings. Including his well known one liner, I aint never win a race, but I never lost a party. Making the vast majority of his attempts and starts behind the wheel of H.L. Waters #0 Buicks, Chevrolets and Fords. His career best Cup Series finish was 17th at Daytona in the summer of 1982. Cowart's best career ARCA Series finish was 10th (twice) at Talladega in the summer and Texas World Speedway in the fall of 1991. Along with being a professional race car driver, another one of his talents was playing the piano. Following a double digit run of DNQ's in the Cup Series and even missing his final 2 ARCA Series attempts, Cowart tried to run the 1997 Winston Open. This was the last chance qualifier race for the Cup Series All Star Race, the called The Winston. Due to several mechanical issues, Cowart did not get his race car through inspection in time. He missed the call to start engines, still located in the garage area. Just after the cars left pit road, Cowart just pulled out onto the track and ran a few laps, forcing officials to delay the green flag. When Delma pulled back into the garage area, NASCAR officials were waiting on him. For his actions, NASCAR fined him $5,000. He told them he was not paying that and never attempted another event in NASCAR or ARCA ever again. Officially announcing his retirement at a Saloon outside of Daytona Beach in 1998.
