NASCAR'S Middle Aged Megastar: Harry Gant

Harry Gant is a former Nascar Cup Series, Xfinity Series Craftsman Truck Series and Sportsman division driver who competed from 1964-1996. Finding plenty of success in the Late Model Sportsman division winning over 200 races and finishing 2nd on final points 3 separate times. He made his Nascar Cup Series debut in 1973, and landed his career changing ride with Hal Needham and Burt Reynolds Mach 1 Racing in 1981. Behind the wheel of the #33 Skoal Bandit ride, Gant found success in the first half of the 1980s. Winning 8 times including the 1984 Southern 500.

Following the 1985 season Mach 1 Racing fell off drastically over the next few seasons. At the conclusion of the 1988 season Needham and Reynolds sold the team to Jackson Brothers. They owned the team for the '89 season, then Richard Jackson left to form his own team. Leo Jackson Motorsports with Andy Petree serving as the teams crew chief, with Gant behind the wheel they brought him back to the front of the field. In the early 1990s Gant won 8 more Cup Series races, including 4 in a row in September of 1991. Also from 1987-1994, Gant won 21 Xfinity Series races. He retired from full time competition at the conclusion of the 1994 season. He did make 11 Craftsman Truck Series starts in 1996, resulting in 4 top 10 finishes.
