Jim Stacy is a former NASCAR Cup Series team owner whose team, Jim Stacy Racing competed from 1977-1983. He is considered controversial because throughout his time as a team owner, Stacy left several drivers and crew members unpaid for there work, and just making several bad business decisions. Several notable drivers spent time driving for his team, such as Niel Bonnett, Dale Earnhardt, Tim Richmond, Mark Martin and Morgan Shepherd to name a few.

Stacy's business dealings were so bad that someone even tried to take his life, by planting a bomb in his car, set to detonate the second he put the vehicle in reverse. Luckily for Stacy the police discovered the bomb before he did. During this time the Jim Stacy Racing team only ran select races.

After laying low for a while, Jim Stacy returned to the NASCAR scene in 1981 when Rod Osterlund came into some financial issues of his own. Letting Stacy come in and purchase his entire #2 Pontiac team with reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt behind the wheel. Earnhardt did not like the fact Stacy was his new owner and in fact left the team after only 4 races. Tim Richmond took Earnhardt's place in the #2, winning the team's final two events. By the conclusion of 1983 Jim Stacy was completely out of NASCAR.
