J.D. McDuffie is a former Nascar Cup Series, Busch Series and ARCA Series owner/driver who competed from 1963-1991. Always competing as an independent raceteam, McDuffie oonly scored 1 pole at Dover in 1978 and finished inside the top 10 in final Nascar Cup Series point standings twice. Making his final career start at Watkins Glen International Speedway in the late summer of 1991, when he lost his life on the fifth lap of the race. Following a mechanical failure, McDuffie collided with fellow independent driver Jimmy Means, leaving McDuffie's #70 corrineing toward the ARMCO Safer Barrier. Suffering a basalar skull fracture. The high point of his career came in the 1970s, by the 1980s costs had risin so high in the Cup Series that McDuffie would soon no longer be competitive.
