Eric Garner (September 15, 1970 – July 17, 2014) was a 43-year-old African American father of six whose killing by NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo ignited a national movement against police brutality . On July 17, 2014, officers confronted Garner in Staten Island for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. Bystander video captured Pantaleo wrapping his arm around Garner's neck in a banned chokehold as Garner gasped "I can't breathe" eleven times before losing consciousness . The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by neck compression . Though a grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo in 2014 and federal charges were dropped in 2019, he was finally fired in August 2019 . Garner's family received a $5.9 million settlement, and in 2020, New York passed the Eric Garner Anti-Chokehold Act, making police strangulation a felony . His dying words became a rallying cry for Black Lives Matter and echoed six years later when George Floyd uttered the same phrase . A street in Staten Island now bears his name: Eric Garner Way
