McKenna Wendel, a 14-year-old South Dakota girl, was found dead on March 19, 2026, in Brookings, more than 50 miles from her Sioux Falls home where she lived with her grandparents . She had been missing since the early morning hours of March 14, and her body was discovered nearly a week later . During a March 23 news conference, Sioux Falls police confirmed the location of her remains but released few details, stating they have no suspect yet while suggesting they believe "all the people that were involved or know her whereabouts" are either in custody on unrelated charges or known to investigators . Police Chief Jon Thum called the case "a tragedy" that will "stick with us for the entirety of our careers," while Lt. Terrance Matia acknowledged the limited information release is intentional to ensure any potential prosecution is successful . Federal authorities and internet sleuths have joined the investigation as the community searches for answers surrounding the teen's death .
