Freddie Gray (August 16, 1989 – April 19, 2015) was a 25-year-old Black man from Baltimore, Maryland, whose death in police custody became a defining moment in the national movement against police brutality and racial injustice . On April 12, 2015, Baltimore police pursued Gray after he made eye contact and fled. Officers found a small folding knife, handcuffed and shackled him, and placed him unsecured into a police transport van . Witnesses recorded him crying out in pain during the ride. By the time the van arrived at the precinct, Gray was unresponsive. He died a week later from a severe spinal-cord injury that medical examiners ruled a homicide . His death sparked days of protests, civil unrest, and a citywide curfew, fueling the Black Lives Matter movement . Six officers were charged with crimes ranging from second-degree "depraved-heart" murder to misconduct. After a mistrial and acquittals, all charges were dropped by 2016 . The U.S. Department of Justice later declined federal prosecution but issued a scathing report documenting unconstitutional practices by the Baltimore Police Department, leading to a federal consent decree mandating reforms including body cameras and safer prisoner-transport procedures .
