Kendrick Johnson (October 2, 1995 – January 11, 2013) was a 17-year-old student-athlete from Valdosta, Georgia, whose death inside a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School became a national symbol of alleged racial injustice and investigative failure . On January 10, 2013, surveillance footage captured Kendrick entering the school's old gym. The next morning, classmates discovered his body upside down inside an upright wrestling mat. Officials ruled his death an accidental positional asphyxiation, but his family rejected that finding . A second, independent autopsy commissioned by the family suggested blunt force trauma and alleged homicide . The family's fight for justice spanned years, with allegations that school officials, local police, and even the FBI hid or ignored evidence—including surveillance footage showing persons of interest near the scene . Director Jason Pollock's documentary Kendrick Johnson (2017) presented new evidence, graphic crime scene photos, and drew parallels to the lynching of Emmett Till . The U.S. Department of Justice closed its investigation in 2016 without filing charges, leaving the case officially unsolved and fueling continued public outcry for transparency and accountability
