Why did Jesus wait?
Martha and Mary sent Jesus one of the simplest and most heartbreaking messages in Scripture:
“Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
They knew Jesus loved Lazarus.
They knew He could heal the sick.
They believed He would come.
But Jesus waited.
Lazarus became weaker.
The road remained empty.
The answer did not come.
And eventually, Lazarus died.
Four days later, Jesus finally approached Bethany.
Martha ran to meet Him carrying the words that had probably been burning inside her heart:
“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”
But even in her grief, Martha said something extraordinary:
“Even now I know…”
Her faith had been wounded, but it had not disappeared.
Then Jesus revealed one of the greatest truths in all of Scripture:
“I am the resurrection and the life.”
Martha thought Jesus had arrived too late.
She was about to discover that death itself was not beyond His authority.
The stone would move.
The tomb would open.
And the voice of Jesus would call:
“Lazarus, come forth.”
Martha wanted Jesus to prevent the tragedy.
Jesus was about to reveal that He was greater than the tragedy.
This is more than the story of Lazarus.
It is the story of waiting when God seems silent.
It is the story of believing when circumstances appear impossible.
It is the story of Martha discovering that God's silence does not mean God's absence.
And ultimately, the resurrection of Lazarus points toward an even greater victory: the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
If you are waiting for an answer today, remember Bethany.
The road may look empty.
The stone may already be in place.
The situation may appear finished.
But Jesus is still the resurrection and the life.
