I took an exceptional nature flight over the North and South Thompson Rivers, capturing their seasonal transformation. At this time of year, rapid snowmelt in the mountains can trigger summer flooding, causing water levels to rise dramatically, sometimes with disastrous consequences. Fortunately, I seemed to have caught the water at its crest, and while elevated, it wasn’t too extreme.
My flight path led me upstream along the North Thompson River to Barriere, then over the Sun Peaks ski resort to Chase, where the South Thompson River begins. From there, I followed its winding course back to Kamloops.
Although strong winds and mountain turbulence made for a less-than-relaxing experience, the journey through the lush, unusually green landscape was breathtaking. Despite the challenges, it was an outstanding flight, offering both adventure and a valuable opportunity to observe nature’s seasonal rhythms.
