About: I Coudln’t Tell You (out this Spring) The True Story of a Mother and Daughter’s Journey to Overcome Their Mental Health Demons

Readers of my first book, Journey to Japan: A Life-Saving Memoir asked me, ‘What

happened next?’ This is that story.

In 2007, Sarah and Fred Deschamps and their daughters nine-year-old Emma and seven-year-old Lily, were returning to Minnesota after seven years of living as expatriates in

Japan. During their time in Tokyo, Lily had been born with unfathomable medical issues

requiring seven grueling surgeries to put her little body back together.

Now, at age seven, she was whole. The family was planning a triumphant return to life in

the U.S. It was going to be filled with good health and happiness. They were done with

hospital stays, and were starting over.

Unfortunately, weeks after returning, Lily required her eighth operation and then doctors discovered that she had chronic kidney disease and would eventually need a transplant.

What came next for Lily was a downward spiral into anger, frustration, confusion and

hostility, and her mother Sarah went right down with her. This is the harrowing story of a mother and daughter’s pain, depression, and hurt so deep it came to a breaking point. I thought We Were Done is a fast-paced story filled with a rollercoaster of emotions showing the long-lasting impact that medical trauma has on a family’s mental health.
