This video offers a discussion about the "vietnam" "war", where the speaker asserts that there was nothing to win, and the goal was to stop the spread of "communism". The speaker points out that communism ultimately fell on its own, questioning the purpose of the war during the "cold war" era. It's a compelling look into "history" and military perspectives on conflict.
This video discusses the futility of the Vietnam War, questioning if victory was possible or if lessons were learned, highlighting Ho Chi Minh's strategy of attrition and the eventual disillusionment of soldiers.
[19:18-19:32]
The speaker refutes the claim that the Vietnam War could have been won, stating there was nothing to win and the outcome proved it.
couple of points that you, you brought- Mm-hmm. up in there that I would like to kind of address. The guys who said, "We were winning. We could have won," no. There was nothing to win. I think the outcome proved there was nothing to win.
[19:32-20:02]
The speaker argues that the goal of stopping communism in Vietnam was futile, as communism eventually fell on its own, making the war unwinnable for the US.
What we were going there was to stop the spread of communism- Yeah. according to the, what we were told anyway. Mm-hmm. So, we, we, we, co- country fell to communism. Communism fell of its own weight, so there was nothing for us to win. Even, uh, uh, what we If Okay, we could have fought and we could have won the battles, but the war itself won itself eventually without us having to do anything. So, there really was nothing for us to win. All The best strategy was to let communism just fall on its own.
[20:02-20:47]
The speaker questions whether the country, its people, or the world learned any lessons from the Vietnam War regarding the reasons for engaging in conflicts and the use of communism as a pretext.
And, uh, so it The question I have now i- with my perspective on that, and I don't know if you agree with me on that, uh, but, uh, do you think we learned anything from that war as a country, as a people, as, as the world? Uh, uh, you know, how Did we learn anything about, uh, wars, the reasons we get into them, what not to do? and the big lesson of, for me, this boogeyman that we, we create in order to start wars like communism- Mm-hmm. as, uh, uh, if the spread of communism from all the way around the globe, if we let that country that nobody's ever heard of to this point fall to communism, soon it will be i- in my backyard, uh, I think is a tragic mistake. So, I'll let you talk to that, but I just think- Yeah. have we, have we learned anything?
[21:50-22:36]
Ho Chi Minh's strategy was to outlast the enemy, as he was willing to fight indefinitely, understanding that the US would eventually leave.
And it, it becomes a, a Well, I'll, I'll share this quote of Ho Chi Minh, you know, the North Vietnamese, uh, leader, nationalist, communist. And, and here's, here's the problem we had, one of the problems. He said that you "We may not win, but you will sure- certainly not win." Right. He was willing to fight, they were willing to fight forever. And they had. They fought the Chinese for 1,000 years, the French for 100 years, the Japanese during World War II along with us actually. And, you know, they weren't gonna quit. They weren't g- and, and they lost every battle of consequence, but it didn't matter. Right. They were just gonna outlast us. They knew eventually we'd, we'd go home. We'd find whatever reason.
[23:55-24:37]
The video describes a shift in soldiers' attitudes from patriotic fervor to disillusionment, believing they were being used in a political game rather than fighting for a just cause, making victory impossible.
A lot of And that's the, the, the tale of all the guys who went, uh, before '67 at least. Those guys who, who went for the first time all went there with, "I'm doing the right thing. I'm fighting a war for freedom for America." Very gung-ho about it. Mm-hmm. But it becomes impossible to win when the majority of the soldiers start adapting that, uh, uh, attitude that your brother eventually- Mm-hmm. came around to that, "I'm just being used here in somebody else's war game and, uh, it's, it's all just s- uh, political nonsense and not for the cause that we were told." It becomes I- if you got have A majority of your army has that mindset, there's no way you can win.
