Tom R. Chambers spent three days documenting old Route 66 across the Texas Panhandle ... a route that he and his parents traveled frequently in the 1950s and 1960s.

Old Route 66 has been replaced by I40 most of the way across Texas, though in many of the towns, like Shamrock, McLean, or Vega, and Amarillo, old US66 survives as the main business strip, lined by the empty remains of roadside businesses. Originally spanning 178 miles (290 km) through Texas, today’s Route 66 is about 150 miles (24 km). (Wp)
